Four Other Plumbing Checks for Your Home
We at Spring River Drain & Sewer want to partner with you to protect your home. We have talked in previous blogs about what not to flush, but drain pipes aren't the only plumbing in your home. Here are some other things to consider and the best plumbing strategies to keep from even having to call a plumber for an emergency.
1. Clean the faucet aerators
Occasionally go around the house, take the strainer off the end of the faucet, and clean it out. This will prevent blockage and slow-running faucets. Especially in areas with cast iron main lines and galvanized interior pipes, these can plug up quickly.
2. Clean your water filter
You may not have any filters in your home, or you may have several. Lots of homes have a "whole house" filter which filters all of the water coming into the home. You may also have one on a sink or your refrigerator. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on a replacement schedule.
3. Drain the water heater
Sediment buildup in your water heater tank will hurt the functionality and the efficiency of your unit. Periodic flushing of the tank can minimize this issue. This is not something we recommend a homeowner do on their own. You should leave this to a professional. Ask your plumber to drain the water heater during maintenance.
4. Check running toilets
A faulty toilet flapper or a fill valve that won't stop running can cause you major expense in wasted water. Most of these can be heard, but it's good to pull the lid off the tank occasionally and look and listen for water running. Toilet tank repairs are an easy way to keep from wasting precious dollars!
